Facebook Inc., a social media company, is facing a lawsuit for purportedly spying on Instagram users through their phone’s camera. Facebook while defending itself has denied allegations against it and claimed that it was a bug in the app which has caused the problem and the company is in the process of correcting it. This lawsuit comes after a range of media reports which alleged that Instagram accessed the iPhone users camera even when the user was not active on the app.

The complaint has been filed against Facebook at a federal court in Sans Francisco, the Instagram user stated that Facebook spied on the users to get access to lucrative and valuable data on its users which the Facebook, a social media giant, would not otherwise have access to. Facebook by using the cameras can observe the users at their houses and as per the Instagram user, the Facebook is obtaining extremely private and intimate personal data on their users that includes the privacy of their own homes and also using the same for valuable insights and market research, the complaint stated.

Facebook has denied commenting on the subject matter.

A lawsuit which was filed last month, Facebook was accused of using facial-recognition technology to illegally collect the biometric data of its more than 100 million Instagram users. Facebook has denied the claim and stated that Instagram doesn’t use face recognition technology.

In a world where privacy of the users is given utmost importance by social media companies, Facebook seems to be failing in obtaining that goals. It is up to users now, how much do they trust social media when it comes to their privacy.
